London and Worcester, Simpkin, Marshall, & Co. and R. Groombridge, 1840. A good, tight, copy. Original printer's buckram boards, printed label to spine. Printed by Deighton and Co. Worcester. Two engraved plates, engraved tail-piece, subscribers' list. Small tear to spine head, a little loss to title label, mild internal foxing else very good. Author's presentation copy to a Mr Davidson Esq with a later owner's (Mr Frederick Houghton) neat ex-libris to paste-down. Jabez Allies (1787 – 1856) was an English folklorist and antiquarian. Born at Lulsley, Worcestershire, where his family had resided for generations. He was one of the earliest writers on folklore. In early youth he was deeply impressed by the lingering relics of Roman and Saxon days and by the pastoral life that characterised his native place and later in life and threw light upon vestiges of Roman occupation in his native county. Basel. In inclyta Basilea, Adam Petri, 1515. Folio, 19th century full calf, raised bands to spine, boards blind rolled at edges, marbled end-papers. [12], 221, [i] leaves (AA-BB6, a-z6, A-O6 lacking blank O6). Title page in red and black with decorative architectural border by Urs Graf. Adam Petri' s mark depicting arms of Basel supported by two basilisks). Latin, black letter, in two columns. Generally in very good condition. Spine decorations rubbed, upper hinge starting. Internally very tight and crisp, no annotations nor marks of ownership. Old worm holes to much of text, but isolated and not affecting integrity of paper; legibility may be very slightly affected on some leaves. Lacks final blank (O6). Rare post incunabula printing of Biblical work by the Benedictine monk Pierre Bersuire (c.1290 – 1362). The Reductorium Morale to the Sacred Scriptures in thirty-four books, embracing all the books of the Bible. Also known as the Liber Bibliae Moralis. Printed at Ulm and Strasburg in 1474, in Basel in 1515, and in Lyon in 1536. Bersuire was noted for his extraordinary memory and his early encyclopaedic work in Biblical commentary. The printer and publisher, Adam Petri, was one of the first in Basel to work with illustrators, collaborating with the notorious Urs Graf as well as Hans Holbein the Younger. The present volume features an Urs Graf decorated title page with publishing details and Petri's device inset.

Mild damp spotting to title and last page. Crease to fep else very good, clean and tight. This book translated to: "Anthropological Studies in the Strange Sexual Practises of all Races in all Ages". Iwan (Ivan) Bloch (1872-1922), German dermatologist and psychiatrist, is often called the first sexologist. He discovered the Marquis de Sade's MS and published it under the pseudonym Eugène Dühren in 1904. According to Sigmund Freud, Bloch's studies were instrumental in the development of the anthropological approach to the theory of sexuality. B. J. Morse, Italian and German scholar, spent some pre-war years in Trieste, Osnabrück and other cities, where he began his contacts with German and Italian writers. He was a poet, critic and scholar, a notable translator of poetry (especially Rilke). Morse was made a knight of the Italian Republic in 1966. Hardback.

Coy inscription to title page reads "From Mrs blank Loughborough, June 11 1829 to ." Fourteen page (i-xiv) preface by the Author (D. Foe - 'Daniel Defoe') of The Review.
